'DACA is under threat every day': Dreamer reacts to Trump shutdown proposal

Sanchez criticized the President for bargaining with DACA, but wasn’t surprised.

WOODLAND, Calif. — On Saturday, President Donald Trump offered to extend a program that offers temporary protection to people brought to the United States illegally as children, in exchange for funding for border security.

Katia Sanchez, 23, is protected under the Deferred Action for Early Childhood Arrivals, known as the "DACA" program. There are an estimated 800,000 people who have been offered temporary protection through the program.

Sanchez criticized the President for bargaining with DACA, but said she wasn’t surprised.

The DACA program was rescinded in 2017 by the Trump administration. But by federal court orders, the program is allowing those who were granted deferred action to renew their status.

But, no new applications for DACA status are being accepted, unless action is taken by lawmakers in Washington, D.C.

"Now that we live in this Trump society, DACA is under threat every day,” Sanchez said, adding that she worries for young people like her who are not protected by DACA.
