STANISLAUS COUNTY, Calif. — Another person has drowned at Modesto Reservoir on Saturday, making this Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office's tenth drowning of the year.
Sheriff deputies said they responded to a reported drowning near San Jose Island at Modesto Reservoir at about 11 a.m. The man was found unresponsive in the water at about 11:30 a.m. CPR was performed on the man by paramedics, however, he was pronounced dead at 12 p.m.
The Sheriff's office said he was a 49-year-old from Long Beach but didn't release his name.
The number of drownings in Stanislaus County this year has passed the previous annual record of eight drownings. 6 of those drownings were at Modesto Reservoir from June 29, July 2, July 6, July 19, and September 8.
"This unprecedented number of drownings is a stark reminder of the critical importance of water safety," the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post. "We urge all residents and visitors to exercise extreme caution around all bodies of water."
Stanislaus County Sheriff recommends swimmers always wear a life jacket regardless of swimming ability. Life jackets are available for free at all Stanislaus County reservoirs. A list of Life Jacket Loaner Programs are also available on the City of Modesto's website.
