SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — Highway 50 is open to one-way traffic Monday near Lake Tahoe Airport due to a big rig fire, according to the city of South Lake Tahoe.
The big rig caught fire near Sierra Tahoe Ready Mix, which is right by the airport, according to California Highway Patrol. CHP said two commercial trucks were traveling eastbound on Highway 50 when the truck in front was stopped in the two-way left turn lane, waiting to turn into a parking lot. A big rig that was following didn't leave enough room when passing and hit the lead truck. It's unclear how the fire started.
The city said the airport is only accessible from Meyers.
"The fire is out but cleanup will likely take a while," the city wrote in a Facebook post.
There is no estimated time the highway will fully reopen.
