'Mufasa: The Lion King' to release in US theaters for holiday season

'Mufasa: The Lion King' will hit US theaters on December 20.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — 'Mufasa: The Lion King' is a photorealistically animated movie serving as both a prequel and sequel to Disney's 2019 remake of the original film.

ABC10's Mark S. Allen spoke with various members of the cast while visiting the fictional savannahs of Tanzania.

HERE ARE 3 THINGS TO KNOW:

  1. The soundtrack for "Mufasa: The Lion King" has an all-star cast. The soundtrack features original music written by Lin Manuel-Miranda, as well as compositions from famed movie composer Mark Mancina. When asked about his own sibling relationships in comparison to the movie, Miranda had this to say:

"No, I worked out all my sister issues on 'Encanto.' I gave her 'Surface Pressure' and gave her her flowers for being the oldest sibling and carrying so much burden for the rest of us," he said.

  2. Timon and Pumbaa, known for being two very funny friends of Simba, also appear in the movie and they're played by two very funny guys: Seth Rogan and Billy Eichner, the latter is most well known for his New York-based street interview-style comedy show "Billy on the Street."

While talking about Timon and Pumbaa's penchant for babysitting, Mark asked the two about their own adventures in babysitting.

"I've never been asked to babysit and for good reason," said Eichner.

Rogan had a bit more experience, but not much.

"I've never been the person solely responsible for one of my friend's [kids]. I've watched my nephews a few times. I remember coaching them through how to convince my sister to buy them 'Grand Theft Auto,'" said Rogan.

  3. According to Aaron Pierre, the man behind the voice of the movie's titular character, the film aims to be more than a lesson for young children.

"The film isn't didactic and the film isn't patronizing to young people," he explained. "In it being not patronizing to young people, the result is grown folks can also engage in it and enjoy it ... One of the things that it engages with and wrestles with is the complexities and the nuances of navigating personal relationships and how they can play out."
