AUBURN, Calif — A 15-year-old died Tuesday night after the man he was riding in a car with lost control and crashed into a tree in a rural area of Auburn, California Highway Patrol confirmed.
Mirwais Azimi, a 21-year-old man from Carmichael, was allegedly driving drunk around 7 o'clock Tuesday evening when he struggled to turn left on a sharp curve on Foresthill Road near Deadwood Road, according to CHP Officer David Martinez. Azimi crashed his 2005 Toyota Matrix into a tree, damaging the entire right side of the car.
The unidentified 15-year-old was sitting in the front seat of the car when it crashed into the tree. According to Martinez, the teenager died from the impact.
Azimi was airlifted to Sutter Medical Center in Roseville with major injuries. A second passenger, 18-year-old Samir Niazi from Carmichael, who was sitting in the backseat of the car was taken to the same hospital with moderate injuries.
Azimi was later arrested at the hospital for DUI, and is expected to be charged with felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter, Martinez said.
