The Auburn-based division got a request to join the search effort in the San Gabriel Mountains near Ontario.
RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. — As the search for missing actor Julian Sands continues, a new resource from the Auburn area is joining the search.
California Highway Patrol's Valley Division Air Operations said they got the call to aid in the search for Sands in the San Gabriel Mountains near Ontario.
Sands previously starred in several Oscar-nominated films, including the 1985 British romance "A Room with a View." He also had major roles in 1989's "Warlock," 1990's "Arachnophobia," 1991′s “Naked Lunch,” 1993′s “Boxing Helena,” and 1995's “Leaving Las Vegas."
Sands was reported missing Jan. 13 on a trail on Mt. Baldy, where he was hiking, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Office.
Officials said the Valley Division Air Operations team is used to operating in extreme terrain associated with the Sierra Nevada mountain range and in searches for missing hikers.
In addition, officials said Valley Division Air Operations has the RECCO SAR Helicopter Detector, one of only five in the continental U.S. RECCO is a rescue technology used by teams to help them find people buried by an avalanche or lost in the outdoors quicker. It can search an area of one square mile in about 18 minutes.
Crews will be searching the terrain Friday.

The RECCO SAR Helicopter Detector is capable or searching an area of 1 square mile in approximately 18 minutes. Valley Division Air Operations Crews will be continuing to work with allied agencies in searching the rugged terrain tomorrow.
