CHICO, Calif. — The historic Bidwell Mansion in Chico caught fire early Wednesday morning.
“Last night’s fire at the Bidwell Mansion is a devastating loss for Chico. Our firefighters, whether on duty or off, gave their all in the face of this fire," said Chico mayor Kasey Reynolds in a statement.
Fire officials were alerted to an “illegal burn” at the mansion around 3:15 a.m., KRCR reported. The building is at risk of collapsing.
The Bidwell Mansion is a California State Park featuring a three-story, Victorian-style house museum dedicated to socialites John and Annie Bidwell.
Bidwell Mansion was undergoing a restoration project and was set to reopen in early 2025.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. No injuries were reported.
