Winter storm leading to power outages around Sacramento, Hwy 50 traffic held near Echo Pass | UPDATES

12 p.m. power outage update: Over 2,000 SMUD customers still lack power. A majority of the outages have shifted from the Arden area to parts of south Sacramento.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Weather conditions caused by the storm are causing delays or chain controls in the northern part of California and the Sierra Nevada mountains, especially between Lake Tahoe and Sacramento. Be prepared for travel delays, chain controls and possible road closures.

Gusty winds have also left thousands of residents without power. 

12 p.m. power outage update: Over 2,000 SMUD customers still lack power. A majority of the outages have shifted from the Arden area to parts of south Sacramento.

According to the SMUD Outage Center, over 2,732 customers are without power. As if 10:15 Saturday morning, the most affected area is Arden, with over 1,700 customers without electricity. See below for links to outage maps.

Latest Chains  & Traffic

12 p.m. Update: Eastbound Hwy. 88 is closed from Iron Mountain Road to Kirkwood due to white out conditions, according to CalTrans. There is no estimated time for reopening. 

Interstate 80

  • Eastbound: Due to multiple spinouts, all eastbound traffic is being held at Colfax in Placer County.
  • Westbound:  Chains are required on all vehicles, except those with four-wheel drive and snow tires, from the Nevada State Line to Baxter in Placer County

Highway 50

  • Eastbound:  Traffic is being held 3 miles east of Kyburz in El Dorado County due to spinouts
  • Westbound:  Traffic is being held at Meyers in El Dorado County due to spinouts. Chains are required on all vehicles, except those with four-wheel drive and snow tires from 3 miles east of Kyburz to Meyers.
