Fundraiser set up to aid deputy's recovery after Placer County shootout

Porter is a newer deputy in training, and he is also expecting his first child in just a few weeks.

COLFAX, Calif. — A fundraiser was set up Sunday to aid a Placer County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) deputy with recovery costs and family matters after he was shot Thursday in the line of duty.

Richard Porter was one of multiple deputies patrolling South Auburn Street in Colfax when they found a van in a McDonald’s parking lot that matched a description for a vehicle involved in a burglary the day before, according to the sheriff’s office.

The suspect, who deputies later identified as 37-year-old Stephen Todd Sharp, originally from Tennessee, immediately became uncooperative with deputies, according to law enforcement. Officials said deputies tried to de-escalate the situation before the suspect opened fire on them.

Deputies immediately returned fire, and during the exchange, Porter was struck and evacuated by the other deputies on the scene, according to law enforcement. Additional responding deputies secured the area and determined Sharp dead at the scene, authorities said.

Detectives partnered with the Placer County District Attorney’s Office to investigate the incident, according to the sheriff's office.

Porter’s spirits are reportedly high, he’s eating well and he took some steps Sunday, according to a recovery update by the sheriff's office.

“With unwavering support from his family, coworkers and dedicated chaplains by his side, he’s truly surrounded by love and care,” the sheriff's office said in a statement. “Despite facing a dramatic injury, Deputy Porter has shown remarkable strength and resilience, leaving a lasting impression even on the flight nurse who was amazed by his composure.”

Deputies said Porter could be discharged as early as Monday.

Porter is a newer deputy in training, authorities said. He is married, and the couple is expecting their first child in just a few weeks. Any donations to the Placer 10-35 Foundation will reportedly assist Porter and his family face challenges posed by lengthy recovery and the baby’s arrival.
