SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A man is dead and his female passenger is seriously injured after they crashed into a light pole while driving away from deputies.

According to Amar Gandhi with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, the brief chase started around 11:45 a.m. Monday when deputies saw a vehicle with a code violation on Watt Avenue and Myrtle Avenue.

Gandhi says the driver took off before deputies could turn their lights on and ran a red light at Watt Avenue and Winona Way.

The driver, an unidentified 35-year-old man and parolee at large, hit another vehicle before crashing into a light pole.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene and his female passenger was hospitalized with serious injuries. The other driver they hit had minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
