Nonprofit's storage container stolen from Sacramento farmers market site

The theft was a more than $5,000 loss for the non-profit; money that could have been invested in doing additional outreach.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A Sacramento nonprofit took a major financial hit this week when someone stole its shipping container full of supplies used to operate a weekly farmers market.

Alchemist Community Development Corporation's shipping container was located on the corner of a parking lot near the Florin Light Rail Station, containing tables, chairs, laptops and EBT scanners, among other items.

Early Monday morning, a pickup truck with a trailer pulled into the parking lot and took off with the container in tow.

"It happened in less than five minutes," said Shannin Stein, a special projects manager at the nonprofit.

"It was highly, highly orchestrated and well-planned," she said.

Stein said the theft represented a more than $5,000 loss for the non-profit and the farmers market specifically — money that could have been invested in doing additional outreach to the community.

Despite the setback, the nonprofit is determined to open the market as planned Thursday, renting a new replacement container to hold supplies.

"We think it’s really important to show both our farmers and the community that something like this isn’t going to stop us," Stein said.

Sacramento's Big Day of Giving is coming up next week on May 2nd. In light of this loss, Alchemist is seeking support in the form of donations.
