Roseville, Calif. — A generous tip left by an unexpected customer has a waiter at the House of Oliver in Roseville feeling overwhelmed.
David Fabila was serving outside by himself on a busy Friday night when a younger man sat down at a table and waited for a friend. Fabila was swamped with a few larger parties outside and didn't get the chance to talk to the man and his friend very much.
They ordered dinner and several bottles of wine. When Fabila left the check at their table, he had no idea when he picked it up what was going to be inside.
The man, Steffen Berr, a college student at Sacramento State, tipped Fabila the entire amount of his bill, $191.35, paying in total more than $300.
Fabila was stunned and overwhelmed. He didn't believe it at first so he checked the receipt several times to make sure.
"My initial reaction was I thought he filed it out wrong," Fabila said. And he said, 'we are young, but we are worth serving.' The tip he left me was the exact amount of the bill."
There's a new viral challenge circulating on Facebook and Twitter called #TipTheBillChallenge where people tip the entire bill they receive. Fabila thought Berr was just taking part in the challenge, but Berr had no idea about the challenge. He said he was just feeling generous and in the mood to celebrate his senior year being over.
"I had this money that I didn't expect to have so I wanted to share some of that," Berr said. "I didn't plan on it. It happened. I didn't know his situation either. I am just really glad I did it."
Fabila works two jobs and has several children with a baby on the way. He said Berr's tip meant so much more than the money.
"You totally just made everything so much better and like I said, you have no idea what you did for me and what made it so great, that he didn’t know anything about me," Fabila said.
