Conductor and pianist detail meaning behind music for Sacramento Philharmonic and Opera show

Conductor Ari Pelto and pianist Awadagin Pratt share what makes their concert a one of a kind show.

SACRAMENTO, Calif —

Local musicians and special guests will be in the spotlight when the Sacramento Philharmonic and Opera takes the stage Saturday night at the SAFE Credit Union Performing Arts Center.

ABC10 talked with conductor Ari Pelto and pianist Awadagin Pratt about what makes their concert featuring American and European composers one of a kind. They share their personal meaning behind the music.

“There’s a place in the middle, there’s a place called a ‘cadenza’ where the pianist is solo, and in this piece, the cadenza is my cadenza. And every given night I improvise about 10 to 20 percent of it,” Pratt said. “So, what you will hear is something no one has heard before and nobody will ever hear again.”

“This summer my father passed away, and I decided that because my father was Finnish, and fan of Sibelius, I decided to use this opportunity to do a little dedication to my father,” Pelto said.

Leaders with the Sacramento Philharmonic and Opera say their special 10th anniversary season mark a decade of music education in their schools, community service and world-class performances.

“You’re going to have a great time,” Pelto said. “No matter whether you’ve ever been the auditorium before, or seen our orchestra before, you’ve got to come, you’re going to have a blast.”
