Sacramento State holds events to raise awareness about mental health and suicide

Students, staff and community members are invited to participate in the events.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California State University - Sacramento is hosting a number of events this week to raise awareness about mental health and suicide prevention.

On Thursday, more than 1,700 people registered to participate in the “Out of Darkness” walk at 5:30 p.m., a two-mile event on campus. The event's objective was to raise money for the American Foundation for Suicide. Last year’s walk raised more than $17,000 for the organization.

The event was open to students, staff and community members.

Those who participated in the event could also share their reasons for walking by writing on a community chalkboard. The chalkboard will remain up through Friday.

Earlier this week, more than 1,000 backpacks lined the Library Quad on campus to represent the number of college students who die by suicide each year. The traveling exhibit, called Send Silence Packing, is curated by Active Minds.
