SACRAMENTO, Calif. — On Wednesday, the Sacramento Police Department and the Martinez Police Department announced a "K9 fund" in honor of officer Tara O'Sullivan.
"Today is especially difficult for me and my family because just three weeks ago we lost our loving daughter, sister, and friend," said Tara's father, Denis O'Sullivan.
Denis was joined by his other daughter and a family friend at a press conference held at the Sacramento Police K9 Training Center.
"We believe the combination of police work and dogs is a great memorial to her short life," he added.
Sacramento Police Sgt. Josh Dobson told ABC10 that $22,000 has been raised so far to benefit the canine campaign. He says that's enough money to purchase a K9 for the department in Tara's name.
Dobson explained it can cost anywhere from $8,000 to $12,000 to buy a dog, and approximately $9,000 to get it trained.
"With her love and passion for animals, specifically dogs, there is no better way to honor Tara," said Martinez Police Sgt. Fred Ferrer, who was one of Tara's mentors. "With every K9 you see on the streets these days, I hope you think of Tara."
The O'Sullvan family is hoping the public can help them raise money to buy a K9 for the Martinez Police Department, which is where their daughter began her career.
