Yuba College foregoing 2025 football season, program being placed on hold

The school's athletic director says the administration is offering support for transfer opportunities for players.

MARYSVILLE, Calif. — Yuba College in Marysville will not be playing football in 2025.

Athletic director Erick Burns told ABC10 the football program will forego the 2025 season and is going on hiatus. The decision not to play next year comes a month after Yuba College canceled the remainder of its 2024 season amid coaching changes and player availability.

"At this time, we have decided to place our football program on hold while we reassess our ability to meet these goals for the football program. This decision was not made lightly but reflects our dedication to ensuring that our programs are both impactful and sustainable for the long term," Burns said in a statement. "To that end, we are currently in the process of reviewing all aspects of the program, including coaching, player safety, support systems, and overall structure, to determine the best patch forward. This will take some time, and we appreciate your patience while we navigate this decision."

"We will not have a team for the 2025 season and are focusing now on supporting our current student-athletes in having access to more transfer opportunities," Burns' statement continues.

Yuba College canceled its 2024 season with two games left, weeks after first-year coach Tim Mulvehill resigned. The team was experiencing a winless season under Mulvehill, who resigned amid a district investigation into the football program, the Appeal-Democrat reported.

Specific reasons for Mulvehill's resignation and the nature of the investigation are unclear.
