'Do not underestimate the weather' | Caltrans officials issue warning to drivers ahead of winter storm

Drivers traveling along Interstate 80 should only try to brave the dangerous conditions if they absolutely have to, according to Caltrans.

KINGVALE, Calif. — Caltrans officials are issuing a serious warning to drivers as the biggest storm of 2020, so far, is set to hit the Sierra Nevada on Thursday.

Drivers traveling along Interstate 80 should only try to brave the dangerous conditions if they absolutely have to, according to Caltrans. And officials are reminding people to be prepared.

“Do not underestimate the weather! You want to make sure you’re prepared for anything,” said Angela DaPrato with Caltrans.

Part of that preparation, Caltrans says, is making sure to pack snow chains and to know how to install them, even if those snow chains aren’t required right away.

Caltrans also suggests having the car stocked up and ready to go with extra food, water, warm clothing, and blankets.

“We’re trying to get motorists to their destination, but we’re also advising motorists to stay home if they can. Don’t risk it,” DaPrato said.

Caltrans also suggests drivers have a full tank of gas, phone charges, and a first aid kit.

Caltrans has assigned an additional 250 employees this time of year. They have about 123 pieces of equipment that can be used for snow removal along I-80 and about 70 pieces of equipment along I-50.

Along with drivers staying safe, Caltrans also wants to make sure their teams stay safe while they’re out taking care of the roads.
