Heat wave returns to Northern California during last weekend of June

After a period of mild weather, Northern California and the Pacific Northwest brace for hot weather to return.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Late June in Northern California has been anything but typical with mild temperatures and conditions.

Normal highs for the region this time of year hover around 90 degrees, but many locations have spent the week in the 80s and ocean-cooled air has kept the area away from summer heat.

This pattern will continue for Thursday and Friday, but the weekend will see the heat come back. Thursday and Friday will also see a continued threat of afternoon thunderstorms with brief rain, lightning and gusty winds.

Most Valley locations will start to hit 100 degrees or hotter starting Saturday and Sunday. This will elevate the fire risk for an already dry region. Highs will be higher than normal, but likely below record temperatures.

The same can't be said for areas north of Sacramento as temperatures for Yuba City to Redding will top 105 degrees and near 110 or hotter for Saturday and Sunday. The far Northern California area will likely be under an Excessive Heat Warning for dangerous temperatures for the weekend, joining the Pacific Northwest.

Areas in Oregon and Washington will see a tremendous heat wave with some all-time records in jeopardy. Seattle has only hit 100 degrees three times, but could do it again on Saturday and Sunday. Portland may see highs near 111 Sunday and threaten all time records as well.
