Weekend Forecast: Heat on the way for Sacramento region

As September is winding up, the heat keeps coming.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The summer weather of 2024 has been by many measurements the hottest on record for places like Sacramento. When fall clicked in on September 22, the hope was that the weather would move to the next season.

This has not been the case and northern parts of California has been baking with many days well above average with highs in the 90s and triple digits.

Earlier this week Sacramento hit 101 degrees making it the 45th day so far this year with a high 100 degrees or higher.  This broke the old record of 44 days set just two years ago.  The average for Sacramento in any given year is 24.

The rest of this week has seen highs near average in the mid to upper 80s but Friday will see a new pattern emerge with hotter weather.

FRIDAY

Friday the region will see highs near the mid 90s and upper 90s North of Sacramento.  It will be sunny and dry for the next several days.  Friday night the lack of a strong onshore wind will keep the temperatures warm well after sunset.

WEEKEND

Saturday and Sunday will again see temperatures rise to the 90s but heat in early Fall is different than summer.  Lows will be in the 50s.   The sun angle is lower so the rays are less intense.  The length of day is shorter as well, so you have less hours of daylight and essentially time to heat up or stay hot.

Next week will see even more heat with the peak being Tuesday with highs near 100 degrees and close to records.

The 80s will come back but not likely until the end of next week.
