Why clouds keep it warmer at night | GEEK LAB

Clouds trap daytime heat. There's no space for cooler air when the warmer air can't rise.

Clouds in the summer. That normally doesn’t happen in the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys.

The clouds can make sunrises and sunsets really pretty, but they can also make it feel really uncomfortable.

Here’s why. Clear skies at night allow the heat that builds during the day to rise and the cooler, denser air to sink. This produces pleasant weather overnight.

We could hit 100 degrees during the day but still cool to the 60s at night. This temperature difference gives us a big break from the heat.

Clouds trap that daytime heat. There's no space for cooler air when the warmer air can't rise.

It feels warmer, too, because of the higher humidity, which is basically a measurement of how much moisture is in the air. Higher humidity makes it hard for our bodies to cool because the sweat doesn’t evaporate or dry up, making us feel warmer.
