SACRAMENTO, Calif. — H-Mart's future retail store in South Sacramento is moving along as representatives hope city officials will approve their permits at a Thursday Planning and Design Commission meeting.

As permits to operate the 58,000-square-foot location expired when Raley's closed the previous Food Source grocery store in 2020, city planning staff say they support H-Mart's efforts to revitalize the area and recommend the store be granted a permit.

"A retail store, such as H-Mart, is appropriate at this location because the grocery use provides for the daily needs of existing and future residents and businesses," said a planning staff representative. "The use will increase the retail viability of the shopping center and further strengthen the Mack Road commercial corridor in South Sacramento."

According to the current site plan, the upcoming H-Mart at 6366 Mack Rd. will include:

  • 32 short-term and 6 long-term bicycle parking spots
  • 171 vehicle parking spaces
  • Food court vendors are also set to include Oh K-Dog, Jaws Topokki and more

Mack Road Partnership executive director Bill Knowlton says the upcoming H-Mart is an example of the continued growth of diversity in businesses and business owners in the area.

"We feel strongly that this large culturally diverse market will be an asset to our business district and to the diverse populations of patrons living and shopping in the district," he said.

ABC10 reached out to H-Mart for comment on this story Monday. We have not heard back yet.
