SACRAMENTO, Calif — Former San Francisco 49ers and current Jacksonville Jaguar defensive lineman Arik Armstead was in Sacramento this week hosting a series of community events.
Working through the Armstead Academic Project, he held a Kickoff for Kids Gala and "Stay Hungry" Youth Camp this weekend in hopes to "foster wellness and connectivity with their future aspirations on a college campus."
The project says it’s committed to supporting students in the Sacramento and Bay areas, rejecting the notion that a student's potential should be determined by their zip code.
"Socioeconomic status shouldnt determine the type of education a kid receives, you know, me and you are just alike. We may eat different foods and my skin may be a little darker than yours, you may have a little more money than me, I may have a little more money than you. At the end of the day, we're all human beings and we all deserve the access to quality education so we have a chance to be successful in life," said Armstead.
More than 150 middle schoolers from Sacramento school districts attended Saturday’s free event.
