Families flock to California State Fair on its final day

"We live in Orangevale and we're out here for the food, the fun and the great weather"

SACRAMENTO, Calif — Sunday marks another memorable year and the last day for the California State Fair's 17-day run.

Families travel from all over the state to enjoy it, and for many, it has become an annual tradition.

On Sunday, the rides were in full force, music was playing and food was sizzling, as families spent their Sunday at the last day of the California State Fair.

"We live in Orangevale and we're out here for the food, the fun and the great weather," said Cameron Knopp, a father visiting with his family.

Fair visitors said the cooler temperatures make it easier to focus on the fun and not the heat.

"This is definitely a miracle, how much cooler it's gotten," said Corinne Fitzgerald, who was visiting with her best friend.

"Yeah, it's a lot better weather as in temperature-wise and stuff. It's a lot easier to be outside for a while," added Zaiah Breaux.

This year's favorites include the animals and new exhibits.

"We like the seal exhibit that they have. I think that's new, so that was cool to see," said Nichelle Deguzman, a mother visiting with her family.

Some families said they wouldn't change a thing, but two best friends said they'd like to see more rides added in the future.

"Maybe older kid rides rather than just little rides. I know that it's probably difficult to move around and stuff," Fitzgerald said.

A California State Fair spokesperson said the last weekend tends to be the busiest since it's everyone's last chance to visit the fair.

They encourage people to arrive early and know the parking lot and gates are closing earlier than usual.

For many, the wait to the final day was worth it.

"We just got here like maybe an hour ago. We'll probably be here for another three or four hours. So we'll spend the majority of the day here having fun and then make some good memories and go home," Knopp said.

The fair plans to close its parking lot at 7 p.m. and then the gates close at 8 p.m. and no one else will be let inside.
