Glass breaks and pyrotechnics: Downtown Sacramento becomes a movie set in unnamed production

A simulated explosion was planned for J Street Wednesday night.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — For weeks, parts of downtown Sacramento have played a starring role in a still unnamed Hollywood movie in the making.

The production crews, roadblocks and flashing lights have been turning heads.

“I see cop cars over there out of nowhere,” said UC Davis student Muhammad Ahmed, who was downtown visiting friends.

With Paul Thomas Anderson directing, the Warner Brothers Production features A-list stars, Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn.

But it’s the action scenes playing out on city streets that have people talking.

In particular, a simulated explosion was planned for J Street Wednesday night.

The production company put up flyers around the area, warning that there would be car alarms with amplified sound, glass breaks and pyrotechnics.

The Sacramento Fire Department said it’s aware of the plan.

“We’re working very closely with the production crew that’s out there filming, and all safety precautions are in place,” said Captain Justin Sylvia.

Making downtown Sacramento a movie set comes with the inconveniences of closed roads and loud noises. But it also comes with perks, like celeb sightings.

“I don’t want to jinx it, but I think I might have seen Leo,” Ahmed said. “But from far away."
