SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. — Many California residents have spent two weeks at home already, and now another month of physical distancing has been suggested by President Donald Trump. While many are finding new ways to stay entertained, most people are way outside of our normal routine. And that also includes a fitness routine for some.
With gyms closed, many Americans are looking for online videos to suggest at-home workouts. But at what point do we just give up? ABC10's Carley Gomez admits she was gung ho about working out from home… for about three days. After that, she said she found herself snacking more and binge-watching television. So how do we get out of this funk?
Athletic trainer and fitness YouTuber Austin Hendrickson shared some tips anyone can use during the shelter-in-place order. Hendrickson goes by @trainingtall on Instagram and Youtube and has nearly 80k followers combined. He's also a former UC Davis rower. He’s become a master of online tutorials and training methods, so staying indoors or communicating online isn’t new for him.
Hendrickson does say an in-person connection definitely isn’t something he takes for granted.
“There’s something very special about being able to work out together and in person,” Hendrickson said.
While we’re currently not in the position to work out in groups, Hendrickson says we just have to do what we can. If you’re looking to get at least some fitness in your new routine, Hendrickson says to find something that interests you, like dancing, yoga, stretching, mobility exercises. Small things can add up.
What can you do while you’re binge-watching the latest series?
“Bodyweight exercises like pushups and squats and leg raises. You’re really covering the bases as far as helping you develop a full-body routine,” he said.
Hendrickson added that calisthenic workouts are some of the best types of workouts you can do from home.
Another thing to keep in mind is to make conscious decisions. Before eating another cookie, ask yourself if you need this snack. When you’re making dinner, consciously decide to add a nice helping of vegetables to your savory meals. Hendrickson says these small decisions can make a difference in your weight gain.
Most importantly, he says “it goes back to this idea of keeping your mindset knowing the situation is what it is now. We will get through this, and now we have to adapt and make the best of it. Don’t stress. We’ll get back to where we were, even if we fall off the wagon.”
