According to the National Retail Federation, parents will spend an average of $669 for back-to-school shopping.

If you're thinking what in the world are these parents buying, well they're buying school supplies, clothes, shoes, and electronics. So if you're a parent, we're here to help save you some money!

I took my son's school supply list and went shopping at Target and Staples to find out who has the best deals. First up for the back-to-school challenge, a 12 pack of Crayola color pencils. You'll pay 99 cents at Target compared to $2.18 at Staples.

Now it's time to crunch the numbers on calculators. The best price $9.99 was at Staples, while Target was listed at $10.99.

In this showdown, composition notebooks are the real budget buster. At Target, you'll pay $2.19 for a notepad, whereas Staples is charging $5.99.

In this showdown, Target is the winner of this challenge in my household with a total of $89.59 for school supplies compared to Staples $101.35 for the same products.
