Why are brown shoes bad for job interviews? | Why Guy

If you wore brown shoes to your interview, it may be why you didn't get your dream job.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — We've all likely experienced the disappointment of hearing "no" when applying for a job. It can be confusing when your resume is polished and your references are impeccable.

It's possible what you've suffered is the agony of "de-feet." If you wore brown shoes to your interview, that may be why you didn't get your dream job. Now, here's why.

There used to be an old saying of "no brown in town," meaning no brown shoes with a formal outfit. That rule has gone the way of hobnail boots, but when it comes to a job interview, you've got to be careful.

"They will look at you, up and down, head to toe. They can tell a lot about a person by the shoes they wear," fashion expert Braylon Gorman said.

Gorman says potential employers could view brown shoes as a sign you're not taking the interview seriously.

"They may look at brown as being a little bit too casual for their environment," Gorman said.

It depends on the job. Consider the field and study up on the people who are hiring.

"If you wake up and have to question yourself, then keep it safe. For men and women, of course, a simple black suit or blue suit and the shoe, of course, is always black," Gorman said.

Once you get the job and get to know your bosses, then you can break out the buster browns.
