CALIFORNIA, USA — Today's Why Guy question comes from Roberto: "Why are some street signs different colors?"
OK, Roberto, let's go check out the colors. The street signs within the Sacramento County limits are all in white with black lettering. If you're on one of these streets, then you're in the county.
But why are all county signs one color?
"It's for boundary reasons. Instead of drawing lines on the road, the street signs serve that purpose," according to Matt Robinson, a Sacramento County spokesperson.
Now, the city of Sacramento has green signs with white lettering. You know you’re within city limits driving on streets with that color. Each jurisdiction can approve a color template and style of their choosing.
Here's where it can be different. Private streets can have any color signs they want. They're paid for by the neighborhood HOA and not by the city or county.
As an example, there’s a new development called "The Mill" off of Broadway in Sacramento. They've chosen a brown color with white lettering for their street signs.
Since it's a private development, they can also put in any kind of pavement they want as well.
