Three insurances you'll want to make sure you have | Adulting

When you're an adult, you have to pay for things on your own. Insurance helps you with that.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

There are a lot of things you need to know when you're an adult, especially when it comes to insurance and what you should have insured.

So here's the basic insurances you need:

1. Health Insurance

This will make sure you’re able to see a doctor when you’re sick, when you need your routine checkup and fill prescriptions and not break the bank. And good news, your employer probably provides health coverage, but remember to research different the plans that work best for you.

2. Renters/Homeowners Insurance

If you rent an apartment or home, you’ll want to get renters insurance because it covers for fire, theft, vandalism, among other things. Basically everything your landlord wouldn't cover. It’s also a smart and cheap investment. On average it costs $15 per month and it covers everything your landlord doesn’t.

3. Auto Insurance

Disclaimer: if you don’t have a vehicle, you can skip this. But if you do a lot of driving, this is definitely necessary.

Most states, including California, require at least liability insurance, which means if you're at fault in an accident, it'll help you pay for the accident. Cars can be expensive to repair and auto insurance will help. As with other forms of insurance, there are many variables, so do your research and get the auto insurance that's right for you.

Other insurances you may want: Dental, life, and personal property insurance.
