SACRAMENTO, Calif. — SacRT officials are making adjustments to a light rail station arch after animal rescue activists say birds are getting trapped and dying inside the hollow art installation.
Wildlife Care Association of Sacramento spokesperson Dina Fiala says the fire department was called to the arch in September to remove an owl trapped inside. A portion of the arch was cut open to remove the animal.
The owl was then euthanized after suffering compound bone fractures from falling into the arch, she said.
"I think with any life, human or animal, we should do something immediately like cutting some of the metal rather than waiting. It's a life-or-death situation," Fiala said.
A SacRT spokesperson says they contacted the artist of the 2015 arch known as 'Esperanza' and he is scheduled to make modifications next month.
In the meantime, transit officials put safety netting over the arch to keep wildlife out.
