Paws cut off bear hit, killed by car near Foresthill

The bear was hit and injured along Foresthill Road.

FORESTHILL, Calif. — The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is trying to piece together who cut the paws off a dead bear near Foresthill.

According to department spokesperson Patrick Foy, the bear was killed Saturday after it was hit by a car along Foresthill Road. The bear was left along the roadway due to its size, but it wouldn't be the last time Fish and Wildlife would hear about it.

"It was a decent-sized bear so they couldn’t move it from the roadway," Foy told ABC10. "Sometime between then and the next morning when someone was planning to remove the bear, someone cut the paws off."

Officials were notified when another person stopped and saw the paws were cut off.

The act could lead to a misdemeanor charge of possessing wildlife parts that were unlawfully taken. It's a crime with a maximum penalty of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Anyone with information on the incident can call Fish and Wildlife at 888-334-2258.
