Inside Bru Tea Cafe and Osaka Ya | The shaved ice specialists in the Sacramento area

These two shops have carved out a niche for themselves with their shaved ice concoctions.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — With temperatures set to return to triple digits, here are two shaved ice spots to help you cool down.

Bru Tea Cafe in Elk Grove is known for the unique toppings on their bingsoo, a milk-based Korean shaved ice dessert.

Their tiramisu bingsoo is layered with cocoa and coffee powder, then topped with an entire piece of tiramisu with house-made mascarpone cream.

The flavor combinations don't end there. The shop also has mango coconut, strawberry cheesecake, chocolate and Thai tea.

The shop on Elk Grove-Florin Rd is owned by husband and wife team Tran and Trenton Norgaard.

"What makes our shop a little bit different and bingsoo a little bit different than other shaved ice is that the ice is very fluffy like a fresh snow, so it just melts in your mouth," Trenton said.

The concept was born from their love of food as well as their trips to bubble tea and shaved shops in their dating years.

"I wanted to create a fun place for people to hang out, enjoy dessert and quality drinks," Tran said.

The shop also serves bubble tea, coffee and grilled cheese sandwiches. To view their full menu, click here

When the weather heats up, locals also flock to Osaka Ya, a Japanese confection shop on 10th Street in Sacramento. The shop has been around for more than 60 years and while you might know them for their handmade mochi, the shop also has a shaved-ice window.

Yoshio Murakami, whose family owns Osaka Ya, told ABC10 shaved ice is also a big part of the shops history.

"That's also been since we opened as well. It used to be only three flavors," he said. "And since then, we've been adding on more."

Now, the shop has 16 different flavors, and they make all their syrups in house. Their most popular flavor is Tiger's Blood, which is a combination of strawberry, watermelon and coconut.

Customers can also get ice cream, house-made mochi and condensed milk on their snow cones.

"It was pretty hot today, so it felt pretty good to get a snow cone," said Genna Hosino from Sacramento.

The seasonal treat has a loyal fan base.

"I got watermelon," said nine-year-old Enzo Simas from Carmichael.

"I do get a lot of people saying, 'Oh yeah, my friend recommended it to me,' and I feel happy knowing that people are saying that they enjoy our snow cones," Yoshio said. "Some people saying that they've been coming for like 40 years, or since it started 60 years, they used to know my grandpa and grandma."

Osaka-Ya's shaved ice window is open Sunday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Mondays until 5:00 PM. The shop only takes cash. They will be open on Labor Day.
