Manteca teen who battled cancer heads to Super Bowl 58 after community support

ABC10 sports reporter Matt George caught up with 16-year-old 49ers fan Mason Ferrulli at Super Bowl 58 and asked him about his journey.

LAS VEGAS — With sports fans coming from all over the world to watch Super Bowl 58, 16-year-old Mason Ferrulli said he was excited to be one of them.

The Manteca teen who is recovering from cancer told ABC10 sports reporter Matt George that he also went to watch his favorite team, the San Francisco 49ers, at their NFC Championship.

That's when Manteca business owner Phil Waterford met Ferrulli at his Ford dealership and presented the teen with two tickets to Super Bowl 58.

"When I found out he went to the last game and he said it was one of the most memorable experiences in his life — I knew he has to go to the Super Bowl," Waterford said. "He's endured a lot of risky surgeries and intensive treatments but he's a fighter, he's never going to give up."

Fighting back tears, Waterford said he knew Ferrulli for many years and is happy to see him enjoying himself at the big game.

When Matt George asked Ferrulli what he thought about the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, he said it was crazy — and better than Levi's Stadum.

And as for his favorite player?

"Christian McCaffrey. I like his toughness, his agility and just all of his skills," Ferrulli said.

As fate would have it, McCaffrey scored the first touchdown of the Super Bowl for the 49ers in the second quarter.
