CALIFORNIA, USA — You know the drill: you stuff yourself with Thanksgiving turkey, then take a power nap before a marathon shopping weekend in preparation for the holiday season.
It starts with Black Friday, ends with Cyber Monday and the deals are endless. But for those of us who are trying desperately to save money this season — shout out to my fellow "No Buy November" folks — Black Friday is just...well, Friday. Anti-Black Friday campaigns and new spin-off events such as "No Buy November/No Spend November" are pushing to have folks focus on what they are thankful for this Thanksgiving, rather than the material items they want.
While it's easy to say that you'll spend the day binge watching Netflix and scarfing down Thanksgiving leftovers, there are some other alternatives to Black Friday shopping out there, which promise family-friendly fun.
Did you know most museums are usually open on the day after Thanksgiving? Of course, you may need to check your local museum website to check their hours, but Sacramento Area Museums, including the Crocker Art Museum, California State Railroad Museum, California Automobile Museum and many more, will be open!
There are also some fun events scheduled for Black Friday in the Sacramento area. The Aerospace Museum of California is REALLY getting into the spirit! Black Hole Friday will include fun activities for all ages, photos with Santa for just $3, and awe-inspiring tours of the NASA Hubble Space Telescope Exhibit.
Fairytale Town is offering free admission to families who bring a canned food item on Black Friday, one canned food donation per person. Cans will be donated to the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services – Holiday Spirit of Giving Food Drive. The day also includes free arts and crafts activities. Admission is half-price without a canned food donation.
Additionally, REI is doing an Anti-Black Friday campaign to help curb those shopping urges.
REI's awesome campaign is called #OptOutside. Since 2015, the store closes its doors on Black Friday and encourages customers to get out and join one of the many cleanups across the country. There are over 100 cleanups to choose from hosted by REI and partners, but DIY cleanups are also encouraged.
Here is how to do a DIY cleanup:
- Make a plan
- Grab some friends
- Share pics using #OptOutside
- Properly dispose of waste
Check out REI's DIY cleanup guide and organize a fun outing with friends and family to show thanks to our beautiful planet.
