Oak Park entrepreneurs to give neighborhood students scholarships

The Strapping Store, located in Oak Park, will award two local students $1,000 scholarships for college.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Strapping Store in Oak Park is a colorful mix of large and small merchandise that brings in people of all ages and economic levels, which is exactly how owner Susan Stewart likes it.

“I want you to come say hello to me in the morning. I don’t want it to feel like 'I’m going into the shop. I have to buy something,'" Stewart said. "No! Come in! We’re a community. We’re a neighborhood. I want to hear about your day. I want to hear about your life."

Now, Strapping Store is helping local students go to college.

“We wanted to give back to the dreamers of Sacramento who are obviously the students who are graduating high school and going off into the world," Stewart said. "We decided to do the Strapping Young Entrepreneurs Scholarship.”

Two students graduating from Sacramento High School will be awarded $1,000 to help with college costs. The students also have to be from the Oak Park neighborhood and prove enrollment in a community college or four-year university.

The deadline for the Strapping Young Entrepreneurs Scholarship is July 15. Students must pick up the scholarship application from the store.
