[Sacramento, CA] – ABC10, in partnership with SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union and Sacramento State’s College of Education, is proud to announce Joshua Shrader of James Rutter Middle School – located in Sacramento and part of the Elk Grove Unified School District – as Teacher of the Month for February 2024. In place for 20+ years, Teacher of the Month is one of ABC10’s signature community enrichment initiatives designed to highlight local teachers making a difference in the lives of their students and families.

After being interviewed recently by ABC10’s Mark S. Allen, a seven-time Emmy Award winning member of the news team, an uplifting story about Mr. Shrader will air multiple times during the month of February. The story will also air on Tuesday, February 13, during ABC10’s morning news between 5-7 a.m. and again that same evening during ABC10 News at 5 p.m.

With more than 15 years of teaching experience, Mr. Schrader currently teaches a College and Careers program along with a Boxing, Self Defense & Fitness class to 7th and 8th graders.  The College and Careers program covers a variety of subject areas ranging from veterinary medicine and culinary arts to small engine repair, wood shop, home maintenance, rocketry and aviation, personal finance, computer science and more. Well respected and known for his ability to relate well to his students and for his commitment to his craft, Mr. Schrader utilizes various techniques – including self-defense lessons – and other innovative ways to help advance the dreams of his students.

When asked what he loves about teaching, Mr. Schrader said: “I genuinely believe that as human beings, our purpose in this life is to help other people and to help make the world a better place…teaching provides that pathway for me. Each day, I have this amazing and unique opportunity to help students become better versions of themselves and help them unlock their true potential.”

As part of being recognized as Teacher of the Month, Mr. Shrader will receive $1,000 from SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union plus will be eligible for the title of ABC10’s Esquire IMAX Teacher of the Year – that includes a $5,000 prize – which will be announced at a special awards program next year.
