Malls packed day after Christmas with people shopping, returning

Shoppers flooded to malls and stores to collect on Boxing Day deals, return or exchange gifts after the holiday weekend.

ROSEVILLE, Calif. — The day after Christmas is often known as the day for returning gifts... But for some, it's also known as Boxing Day — the Canadian equivalent of Black Friday.

Canada based retailers like Lululemon held their biggest sales of the year Tuesday. It's something shoppers from all over are taking advantage of through the holiday season.

“Two years now we found out the best sales are on Boxing Day because they are a Canadian based company," said Sabrina August from Grass Valley. "We always come here every December 26."

The August family and many others found their way to the Roseville Galleria to continue their holiday shopping.

According to the National Retail Federation, the average shopper was expected to spend just under $900 on the holiday season.

“I would say the sales have been about the same from Black Friday to now,” said August.

Parents like Bill and Val Fagan are at the mall because, rather than guess what their kids want or their sizes, they put a few IOUs under the tree and now their kids have come to collect.

“We traveled from Arizona and we couldn’t travel with too many gifts, so now we are shopping,” said Bill.

Though the shopping mall was packed, Val says she even prefers shopping after Christmas.

Gabi Griggs is making the most of her extra day off.

“Returns," she said. "We were going to look around a little bit but it’s a little crazy."

The National Retail Federation says $173 billion worth of holiday gifts will be returned. They recommend checking the fine print as some stores charge a restocking fee.

“I’m the one that was a little off base I am returning a gift I bought for someone,” said Griggs.

The other big draw to the mall spending those gift cards. Nearly $30 billion was spent on gift cards this holiday season, according to the National Retail Federation.

It's allowing folks like 9-year-old Sawyer to spend his Christmas money on exactly what he wants.

“My bears name is Steven and I choose this one because I got one but he doesn’t have someone to play with so I want this to play with him,” said Sawyer.

Check over receipts or with the gift giver to make sure you're returning your items within the acceptable period. Most returns can be done within 90 days, meaning those Black Friday presents need to be returned by the end of the month.
