RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. — A new report finds many small businesses are struggling with rising costs and supply chain problems. Some are also making tough decisions to stay afloat.
Niyama Design Studio, a Filipino-owned family business in Rancho Cordova, is all about heart.
"I do this in the evenings and on the weekends, and I wouldn't change it for the world. I absolutely love working with my brothers and my mom," Esa Nidoy, with Niyama Design Studio.
The studio makes stickers, showcasing Filipino culture through language, food and catchy phrases.
It was founded two years ago by Jenn Nidoy, a single mom of four.
"Each and every one of us has got a different personality, and when our customers come into the booth, you're welcomed and they're accepted, like family," said Jenn Nidoy.
However, inflation is making their labor of love more difficult.
"The rising costs kind of just really hit us, actually pretty hard the last couple of weeks," said Esa Nidoy.
A new report by the National Federation of Independent Businesses said inflation, supply chain disruptions and labor shortages continue to limit the ability of many small businesses to meet the demand for their products and services.
Esa Nidoy said the cost of paper has also increased and has cut into their bottom line.
"We're really having to think about what designs are going out and how much of each design that we can produce," she said.
According to the report, they're not alone as 31% of business owners recently reported that supply chain disruptions have had a significant impact on their business.
"The supply shortages, there are certain times where we can't find a product. We use special paper, and we use special laminate and it's just so tough being a smaller business. We got to go through the big box stores, and if they don't have anything, we are just scraping the bottom of the barrel," said Esa Nidoy.
