But you can be sure Johnson won’t pay over sticker for anything this holiday season. He’s always looking for the best ways to save, especially while shopping around the holidays. After all, Johnson specializes in giving his clients money-saving pointers. He’s a financial advisor with TruWest Credit Union.
Johnson shared some expert advice on how you can get the best bang for your buck this holiday season.
“The number one thing we have to do is make a list and check the price,” he said.
Johnson says the sooner you can find out what your loved ones want – the better. That way you can pre-shop your list.
“So that way you can start setting up a budget for yourself,” he said. “It can keep us from going over.”
It takes a fair amount of self-control, but Johnson says there’s a big thing you don’t want to fall victim to.
“The flash sale… you have to have it now,” he said. “No, I don’t really need seven massage guns… I can maybe wait on those things.”
He says it’s important to avoid those impulse buys and stick to your list. Even better - use price comparison apps.
“Use those apps, use those shopping tools, browser extensions, that allow you to check prices, especially historical prices, to make sure that you’re not overpaying,” said Johnson.
Another great tip is to check if any local retail stores will price match.
“Not only do you get the deal that you’re looking for, but also, you might get a more favorable return policy, if the gift doesn’t quite hit the mark,” Johnson said.
The worst thing you can do is wait until the last minute.
“No time to research, no time to plan, no time to budget and now you’re overspending on what could be a critical item to make the holidays very special,” said Johnson.
But as one shopper shared – despite the shopping frenzy, whether you’re buying a little or a lot, it’s important to remember the true meaning of the season, and don’t forget to give the gift of time to your loved ones.
“It’s never about the gifts. It’s about family, a meal, getting together, if you want to pray, pray… if you want to watch TV, fine, just be together and be grateful,” said JR Hellman of Phoenix.
And that’s something that’s priceless, and more special than any gift money can buy.
