YUBA COUNTY, Calif. — They are tipping angels.
A group called "Tipping Yuba-Sutter Counties" tips restaurant servers generously at random all over the area.
"I started the page on a whim and it was like we could all use some positivity right now in our lives and it took off and I was not prepared at all," said Amanda Gray who started the page.
Gray said she got the idea after seeing other tipping pages all over the country. People donate directly to her and then other people volunteer to do the tipping.
"We've tipped 21 servers so far and we've raised 10,500 dollars and that's what we've given out in tips," Gray said.
On top of more than $10,000, they have $600 ready for a lucky server next week. The servers on the receiving end are completely surprised, shocked, and many get emotional.
"Getting to be one of the special ones was really precious and especially right before Christmas. I have four kids and now I can't stop watching all the videos," Stephanie Johnson, owner of Mom's Diner, said.
Johnson said the surprise $500 tip was the perfect gift.
"Throughout the whole day I kept tearing up because it's so sweet," she said.
She's not alone, the movement continues every week. Secret tippers may be heading to your restaurant.
"It's totally random. They go to a restaurant and they get seated with whatever server and that's the person who gets the tip," Gray said.
