CALIFORNIA, USA — Days after Patelco Credit Union suffered a ransomware attack, some clarification about what members can use is coming to light.
In a statement posted to its social media channels Sunday, the credit union said it required them to shut down some day-to-day banking systems including online banking and the mobile app including electronic transactions like transfers, direct deposit and payments and accessing the online portal.
CEO Erin Mendez has updated members daily and said in an update Wednesday they're still investigating the attack, but members' "money is safe and secure."
The call center will be open Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 800-358-8228 but locations will be closed for the Fourth of July. Long wait times are expected.
"Unfortunately, we do not anticipate having our systems up and running this weekend," wrote Mendez in a statement sent to members Wednesday.
Members can use Venmo and Paypal but cannot use Zelle, Online Banking systems or Outgoing Wire Transfers. Patelco said debit/credit card transactions may have "limited functionality." See all updates and what members can and cannot use HERE.
The credit union also said members will not be penalized, incur fees or be penalized because of missed payments for loans through Patelco while systems are down.
