California is recalling raw milk over concerns that it could carry bacteria that can cause food poisoning.
The raw milk is produced by Organic Pastures Dairy of Fresno County labeled "Grade-A raw milk" with a code date of "OCT 24." The California Department of Food and Agriculture found campylobacter bacteria during a routine inspection at the facility. The department is urging the milk to be pulled from store shelves, and consumers who have the milk are urged to dispose of the product.
The CDFA has not reported any illnesses as a result of the raw milk.
According to the California Department of Public Health, the bacteria causes campylobacteriosis, which can lead to symptoms of diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever. The illness usually occurs two to five days after exposure and lasts about a week. The illness is usually mild.
Complications can arise. The CDPH stated a small percentage of people may have joint pain and swelling after the infection, and also stated the bacteria can cause a life-threatening infection for people with compromised immune systems. In addition, a rare disease called Guillain-Barre syndrome can cause weakness and paralysis. The CDPH stated this disease takes effect several weeks after the initial illness.
