California's First Partner promotes equal pay for women

Jennifer Siebel Newsom is backing her first significant initiative since her husband became governor — a drive to promote equal pay for women.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Jennifer Siebel Newsom is backing her first significant initiative since her husband became governor — a drive to promote equal pay for women.

She joined California Labor Secretary Julie Su and others Monday in starting an education campaign on the gender pay gap and ways to close it.

They announced 13 corporations that have promised to conduct an annual gender pay analysis, review hiring and promotion policies to avoid any unconscious bias, and follow best practices to make sure all employees are treated equally.

The 13 include some big names, like Airbnb, Apple and AT&T Communications Inc.

A new study says California women make 89 cents for every dollar men get.

Siebel Newsom says California has the nation's strongest equal pay laws, but there is still more work to do.
