LOS ANGELES COUNTY, Calif. — "Emilia Pérez," a musical film about a Mexican cartel kingpin who fakes her death to follow her dream of transitioning into a woman, released on Netflix and in select theaters Wednesday.
ABC10's Mark S. Allen went down to the Egyptian Theatre to learn more about the movie from the stars of the cast.
HERE ARE 3 THINGS TO KNOW:
- Turn on the subtitles; the movie is in Spanish. Even though the film itself is French, it all is set in modern-day Mexico, with all music and dialogue being in Latin-American Spanish.
- Despite it being a French film made in Spanish, there are some very familiar faces in the main cast. Both Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez play important roles in "Emilia Pérez." It's also Gomez's first Spanish-speaking role in a feature film.
- The core message is people have the strength and will to change, regardless of who they are.
"For me, what is important in this film is that precisely that power to change and the power to touch hearts in all of those that see the movie," explained Karla Sofía Gascón, who plays Emilia. "My hope is by doing this, we have planted a seed in the audience for them to see that change is possible."
