CERES, Calif. — Leslie Bonsu started Bonsu Elite Athletics, a gym with a focus on intense training programs, 16 years ago with his wife in Ceres. During that time, the gym helped train various professional athletes, including some Olympians and Super Bowl champions.
ABC10's Mark S. Allen went out to Ceres to see Bonsu Elite Athletics' next generation of athletes.
HERE ARE 3 THINGS TO KNOW:
- As mentioned earlier, multiple professional athletes from the Central Valley have trained at Bonsu Elite Athletics. Some of those athletes include:
Cade Cowell, winger for the US Men's National Soccer Team and for Club Deportivo Guadalajara
Daron Bland, cornerback for the Dallas Cowboys
Nicole "Sis" Bates, member of the USA Women's National Softball Team
Johnny Mundt, Super Bowl champion and tight end for the Minnesota Vikings
Frank Ginda, linebacker for the Los Angeles Chargers
Kendall Wesenberg, Olympian for the sport of Skeleton
Aziz Shittu, Super Bowl Champion and former defensive tackle for the Philadelphia Eagles
Maddie Nickles, 2020 Olympics Team USA Silver Medalist in softball and current Assistant Coach for the UCLA Women's Softball Team - The main goal of Bonsu Elite Athletics is to support those aiming to enter college or professional sports. According to his website, Leslie Bonsu started the gym while he was a track and field coach in Modesto due to the lack of opportunities he felt young athletes had in the Central Valley.
- The gym is more than a gym. It's a close knit community of athletes.
"The difference this gym made for me is, to be honest, everyone here, we're a family," a member explained. "It's like we got a lot of people counting on us and it's good because you come here every single day to keep working and keep being better knowing that people are going to be backing us up."
