Why the Golden Globes weren't so shiny this year | Mark's Take

"Oppenheimer" wins and Oscars could be on the way. "Barbie" gets a participation award the win in the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category.

The Golden Globes were back Sunday night, and if you're looking for a hint towards what might win the Oscar in two months; they're not a very good barometer by which to judge.  For that, wait until next Sunday for The Critics Choice Awards, historically a good foundation for what's to follow with the Academy Awards.  (Full disclosure, I'm one of the founding members, one of the 12 who started that organization all those years ago; and accordingly, I'm biased.)

Back to the Golden Globes.  On the TV and series side, I think they nailed it.

The new Hulu series "The Bear" took honors as it should, and Netflix's limited series "Beef" took both acting and best series honors.  In a huge win for the AAPI community,  Ali Wong and Steven Yin were beaming as they bolted to the stage to accept.

If there's any hint of a win that may be echoed, it began with a historical moment last night. Lily Gladstone won best actress for "Killers of the Flower Moon." She became the first indigenous person to do so in the history of the Globes. I think she's a lock to do so again next week at Critics Choice.  If so, count on her to take home the gold on Oscar Sunday.

Same for actor Cillian Murphy,  director Christopher Nolan and the film "Oppenheimer." Last night it took best film, best director and Murphy for best actor.  If we see more wins next weekend,  Oppenheimer will be the one to beat Oscar night.

As for the overall show quality and entertainment value of the Golden Globes, I don't think I'm alone in saying it was flatter than flat. Kevin Costner looked like he was being held hostage and may have been a good reflection of how the rest of us were feeling.

The showrunners knew that popularity needed to be reflected somewhere along the way, as often awards shows don't reflect what people are actually watching. So, the Globes created an award for box office champion -- the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category. That was the only win of the night for "Barbie."

It was one of the more satisfying moments of the night, when Margot Robbie decked out in all pink, of course, and Greta Gerwig took the stage to sincerely thank the audience.

"We would like to dedicate this to every single person on the planet who dressed up and went to the greatest place on earth: the movie theaters," Robbie said.

Gerwig also thanked everyone.

"Thank you to everybody, all the Barbies and Kens in front of and behind the screen," she added "It was the greatest, most joyful show of craftsmanship and passion I’ve ever seen."
