It's Halloween costume time so we went to Evangeline's Costume Mansion

In the heart of Old Sacramento lies a mansion... Evangeline's Costume Mansion. Mark S. Allen dressed to impress while touring the 50-year-old business.

SACRAMENTO, California — Evangeline's Costume Mansion has been located in Old Sacramento since 1974. 50 years later, the costume and novelty gift shop is trendier than ever, especially around Halloween.

ABC10's Mark S. Allen met up with owner Deborah Chausse and Special Projects Manager Jennifer Kossmann Thursday morning for a tour of the historic shop.

HERE ARE 3 THINGS TO KNOW:

  1. Evangeline's Costume Mansion occupies one of the oldest building in Sacramento. The business is comprised of two historical buildings: the Howard House and the former Lady Adams Building, which was constructed using materials from the ship "Lady Adams" in 1952.

The Lady Adams Building "was able to survive a massive fire in 1852 that destroyed much of the fledging town, making it the oldest building still standing in Sacramento," acccording to the store's website.

  2. The store has three floors of costumes, with the second and third floors featuring multiple sections dedicated to separate genres of costume.

While the first floor mainly focuses on gags, party favors, and trendy pop culture references, the second floor features the Gothic Chamber, Renaissance Room, Saloon, Jungle, and Lab. The third floor is home to the Circus, Disco, and Storybook Land, as well as a large selection wigs and special effects makeup."

  3. Evangeline's Costume Mansion has gained a bit of a second-life thanks to social media sites such as Instagram.

"A lot of people, if they're invited to a party, they can't wear the same thing they wore last year," Chausse said. "They have to get a new outfit because those pictures already exist. If they are going to two parties, of course, two different outfits."
