Love and Obsession: Lady Gaga talks about her inspirations ahead of 'Joker: Folie à Deux'

Mark S. Allen sat down with icon Lady Gaga to chat about love, obsession, Manson Girls, and the connection to "Joker: Folie à Deux."

"Joker: Folie à Deux" is the long-awaited sequel to the 2019 "Joker" movie, which follows failed comedian and party clown Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) down his descent into madness. This time around, the Joker meets his match, Harley Quinn (Lady Gaga), while institutionalized in Arkham Asylum.

ABC10's Mark S. Allen sat down with Lady Gaga to chat about her take on the classic cartoon and comic character, as well as the movie's take on "true love."

HERE ARE 3 THINGS TO KNOW:

  1. "Folie à Deux" roughly translates to "shared madness" in French and is a psychiatric syndrome where two or more people share a delusional disorder, typically psychosis.

  2. Possibly best known for comedies "Old School," "Due Date," and "The Hangover" series, Director Todd Phillips is the man behind the sad clown story of "Joker" and "Joker:  Folie à Deux."

"This was such a bold way to tell this story," Lady Gaga said about Phillips. "I just wanted to give him everything that he could possibly need to work with so that he could tell the story that was in his heart."

  3. As Lady Gaga told Mark, her take on the classic cartoon and comic book character Harley Quinn was crafted through cult research and personal emotion.

"I tried to blend my research of Manson Girls also with true love. I really thought a lot about empathy and compassion and we argued a lot on set about this," Lady Gaga said. "There was a lot of discussion around how she loved Joker. To bring in the perspective of a woman, I always was saying 'no, she loves Arthur too.' I think her empathy and love for Arthur was real but I think also her love and obsession with Joker was dangerous because she was willing to provoke Arthur to meet Joker. I always thought that that was kind of more dangerous than 'Ly [Harley] lighting a match was the fact that she was willing to do that."
