SACRAMENTO, Calif. — 'Moana 2,' the sequel to the hit 2016 Disney movie 'Moana,' follows the title character (played by Auli'i Cravalho) as she reunites with Maui (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson) while on a journey across Oceania.
ABC10's Mark S. Allen went down to Disney Animation Studios in Burbank to learn more about the new movie.
HERE ARE 3 THINGS TO KNOW:
- 'Moana 2' wasn't initially planned to be a movie, but instead an animated TV series. The series was announced during Disney Animation Studio's Investor Day back in 2020, with a planned release for 2023. In February 2024, however, it was announced the series would instead be released as a feature film.
- Due to the original plan of "Moana 2" being a television series, the movie was made at Walt Disney Animation Studios Vancouver instead of the main animation studio in Burbank. This makes it the first Disney animated movie to have been made in Canada.
- Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson enjoyed his time as Maui in both movies, connecting with the demigod and the movie on a more personal level.
"It's ego tripping. It's all ego. I demanded it," Johnson joked as he spoke with Mark in 2016 after the first movie was shot. "I had the best time. I had the best time with this."
"You realize that Disney, they are the greatest storytellers. [They are] the greatest storytellers on Earth because ultimately, the characters will get knocked down, they get back up, but there is just the element of hope. There's faith and not only is it relevant today, but I think it just speaks volumes and powers everyone too as well."
