Oak Park Brewing Company to hold Peoples Beer Fest

The Peoples Beer Fest is an event focused on showcasing the talents of Black beer brewers throughout and even outside of the United States.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Peoples Beer Fest is an all-inclusive drinking festival with a focus on Black brewers and their brews. Oak Park Brewing Company, the main organizer for the event, says it's "California’s Largest Black Beer Festival."

The Peoples Beer Fest will start on Thurs, Oct. 10 and end Sunday, Oct. 13.

ABC10's Mark S. Allen spoke with Rodg Little, one of the two head brewers at Oak Park Brewing Company, to learn more about the Peoples Beer Fest.

HERE ARE 3 THINGS TO KNOW:

  1. The event will feature more than 40 drink vendors, as well as multiple food vendors, learning workshops and entertainment.

"We've been working on this since early January. There was a lot of moving pieces to this event," Little told Mark. "We have our first official headliner, which will be the Nappy Roots. We have food pairings going on, Fixins Soul Kitchen. We have a great bottle share, where we're going to have beers from all across the country being showcased. A lot of them will be Black-owned beer brands that you don't know about. It's all about educating, creating and having fun."

"We're going to have over 40 beverage vendors," he continued. "That's pretty big for a small brewery doing something on a small scale. We're pretty stoked about it."

  2. UC Davis has a scholarship for those with an interest in brewing. The Tapping Potential Scholarship is available to those in the UC Davis Master Brewers Certificate Program who have "understanding of the barriers traditionally faced by people from underrepresented populations and demonstrate a high potential for leadership in promoting understanding of diverse groups in the brewing industry," according to the university's website.

The most recent recipient of the Tapping Potential Scholarship is Chijundu Onwuchekwa, a student from Nigeria who attends UC Davis through an online extension program. Onwuchekwa will be at the Peoples Beer Fest.

  3. While being an all-out party, the Peoples Beer Fest also has a strong focus on Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, commonly referred to as DEI. As part of the educational workshops at the event, Crafted for Action founder Jen Price will be speaking at a panel on how to bring diversity to breweries and the craft beer world.
